Teeth-whitening is Not Just for Women

See Your Dentist When...

by Dianne Rodriquez

You want to make sure you see your dentist for your annual exams and cleanings. However, in some cases, your dentist may wish to see you more often, such as twice a year. If this is the case, then this is the schedule you will want to follow. Along with having your routine check-ups done, there are many other reasons why you may want to make an additional visit to see the dentist, and you can learn about some of the common reasons for extra visits right here.

You see a visual sign of a problem with one or more of your teeth – Sometimes you can catch possible dental problems when you look at your teeth in the mirror. If you notice that a tooth suddenly has a chip in it, a tooth has a line in it that may be a fracture, you see a darker spot on a tooth, or you notice a small hole developing in a tooth, then it's time for an additional visit. Each one of these things may require treatment right away to avoid bigger problems. Putting off care for these types of things can lead to more extensive treatments, and that can mean more discomfort and more money.

You have bad breath you can't shake – If you are suddenly scaring people off with your bad breath and you can't seem to get a handle on it with brushing and mouthwash, then you'll want to seek the dentists help. Bad breath can indicate things going on in your mouth like a cavity, an abscess or even gingivitis. None of these issues are things that should be ignored. You may also have health problems like something going on in your intestinal tract, and your dentist will then inform you to make an appointment to get in to see your primary care physician.

You are experiencing pain – If you have pain in a tooth, try to use floss and see if there is food stuck between two of your teeth causing the pain. If this doesn't work, then go to the dentist. There are many reasons you may be having tooth pain, but you really need to get to the bottom of it because some of those reasons can be serious and need to be taken care of as soon as possible. For example, an abscess can cause pain, and you'll need antibiotics. Or, a cavity can cause pain, and you'll want it filled. Even grinding your teeth can cause pain and you'll want to be put in a night guard to stop the development of more damage.
